About the 24V 5.9L Cummins Diesel

Launching with two valves per cylinder, the 5.9 was installed in Ram pickups from 1989. In 1998 it went through a major revision, primarily to keep up with emissions regs, and acquired a 24 valve head, electronic fuel injection and a Holset turbo.

One of the most interesting features of this engine was the absence of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or other emissions controls. The design was so good they just weren’t needed, and that’s one reason for the high reliability: There’s less to go wrong!

When the 24 valve engine debuted, output with a manual transmission was 235hp and 460lb-ft. That grew to 305hp and 555lb-ft before the engine was phased out in 2007. Fortunately, for those who want more, a range of 5.9 Cummins 24 valve performance upgrades are available from Powerhouse Diesel.
