6.7 Powerstroke oil filter housing upgrade for 2011 to current trucks

6.7 Powerstroke Oil Filter Housing: Leaks, Messy Changes and the Billet Fix

If you change your own oil on a 6.7 Powerstroke, you know the routine. The factory cartridge filter makes for a messy oil change, and the housing is a common place for a leak to start. It is one of the places we check when a customer has an oil leak.

The SPE billet oil filter housing is one of our best sellers for these trucks, and SPE makes a version for every 6.7 from 2011 to current. Here is why it is worth it and how to pick the right one.

Signs Your Oil Filter Housing Is Leaking

  • Oil seeping around the base of the housing
  • Oil residue on the engine around the housing
  • Oil coating the bottom of the truck
  • A burning oil smell after a drive
  • Oil level dropping between changes with no smoke

Before you blame the housing, clean the area with brake cleaner, drive the truck and look again. On a 6.7, an oil leak can also come from the CCV system, the turbo oil lines or injector return lines. A little UV dye in the oil makes it easy to find the real source.

SPE Billet Oil Filter Housing

SPE replaces the factory housing with a solid piece of billet aluminum, CNC machined in house and black anodized. Every version shares the same core design:

  • Replaces the factory FL2051S filter housing
  • 30 percent more oil flow than the factory setup, according to SPE
  • Retains all the factory sensor locations, so nothing else on the engine changes
  • Uses a CAT spin on filter instead of the factory cartridge
  • Fits F250, F350, F450 and F550, including cab and chassis

Which Housing Fits Your Truck?

Truck SPE housing SPE part numbers
2011 to 2019 2011 to 2022 housing, 2011 to 2019 version S100214, S100215
2020 to 2022 2011 to 2022 housing, 2020 to 2022 version S100216, S100217
2023 and newer, regulator on the factory housing 2023+ housing S100244, S100245
2023 and newer, no regulator on the factory housing 2023+ listing, 2020 to 2022 style S100216, S100217

2023 and 2024 owners, check before you order. Most newer engines need the 2023+ housing, but some 2023 and 2024 trucks left the factory with the 2020 to 2022 style housing. Look at your housing and gasket shape and whether there is a regulator on it. If you are not sure, send us your VIN and we will tell you which one you need.

What Is Different on the 2023+ Housing

  • Two auxiliary oil ports, 1/8 NPT and 1/4 NPT with plugs included, for a turbo oil feed or temperature and pressure sensors
  • Works with the SPE cast lower oil pan, with the drain back bungs and oil pan heater still accessible
  • Factory style gasket, with SPE's upgraded Buna N gasket included
  • Stainless hardware and a CAT filter in the box

Which Filter Does It Use?

Every SPE housing, 2011 to current, takes one of two CAT filters. You pick which one when you order:

Filter Size Best for
CAT 1R-1807 Long Maximum filtration, ideal for extended intervals
CAT 324-2598 Shorter More clearance on lowered trucks or off road builds

Both are heavy duty filters you can find at any CAT dealer and most parts counters. We also stock the CAT replacement filter for the SPE housing.

Why It Is Worth It on a Stock Truck

  • Cleaner oil changes. A spin on filter comes off in one piece, with no cartridge to fish out.
  • Better filtration. A big CAT filter holds more contaminants than the factory cartridge.
  • One less leak point on the engine.
  • More oil flow for towing and tuned trucks.

Install Tips

  • Do it at an oil change so you are draining and refilling anyway.
  • Clean the area around the housing before you start so you can spot any future leak right away.
  • Use new O rings and torque to the instructions.
  • Prime the new filter with clean oil if the instructions allow, then check for leaks at idle before you drive.

While you are under there, the SPE billet stainless oil drain plug is a cheap upgrade over a stripped factory plug.

Building the Engine?

If you are chasing power, oil supply matters even more. SPE also makes a billet oil pump gear for the 6.7. For machine work and short blocks, see our short block buyer guide.

FAQ

What filter does the SPE 6.7 Powerstroke oil filter housing use?

Every version uses a CAT spin on filter. Choose the long CAT 1R-1807 for maximum filtration and extended intervals, or the shorter CAT 324-2598 for more clearance.

Does SPE make an oil filter housing for a 2023 or newer 6.7 Powerstroke?

Yes. The SPE 2023+ housing fits most 2023 and newer F250 through F550 trucks. Some 2023 and 2024 trucks use the 2020 to 2022 style housing, so check for a regulator on your factory housing or send us your VIN before you order.

Do I need to move any sensors with the SPE oil filter housing?

No. SPE retains all the factory sensor locations on every version.

Is a billet oil filter housing worth it on a stock 6.7 Powerstroke?

Yes, if you change your own oil or have had a leak at the factory housing. Oil changes get cleaner, filtration improves and you remove a common leak point.
