2019 and Newer 6.7 Cummins Maintenance: What to Service and When
The 2019 and newer Ram 6.7 Cummins (the fifth generation trucks) is built to go a long way, but it is less forgiving of bad fuel and missed filters than the older trucks. Here is what to service, when, and the parts that make each job easier. We cover 2019 and newer because that is when the current generation started; everything here applies to 2020 and newer trucks too.
The truck's oil change indicator and dash messages will tell you when most items are due. Use the intervals below as a guide, and check your owner's manual, since Ram's schedule changes by year, and standard output and high output trucks run different transmissions.
Normal or Severe Schedule?
Every manufacturer publishes two schedules. Towing, hauling heavy, long idling, short trips, dusty roads and very hot or cold weather all count as severe duty, and that describes how most diesel trucks actually get used. If you are not sure which one fits your truck, follow the severe schedule. It costs a little more in filters and fluid and a lot less in parts.
Engine Oil and Filter
Ram allows up to 15,000 miles between oil changes, but the oil change indicator will call for it sooner if you tow, idle or make short trips. Use an API CK-4 diesel oil in the viscosity your manual lists for your climate.
- Schaeffer's 9000 SynShield OTR Plus 5W-40 full synthetic diesel oil. Whatever oil you run, check that the label meets the spec in your owner's manual.
- Wehrli billet oil fill cap and the XDP oil pan bolt kit if you are resealing the pan
Fuel Filters and Water Separator
This is the most important service on the truck. The high pressure pump on these engines needs clean, water free fuel, and contamination is one of the main ways it fails. Ram calls for both the engine mounted fuel filter and the frame mounted fuel water separator every 15,000 miles or 12 months. Drain the water separator whenever the water in fuel light comes on.
- Fuel additive: Schaeffer's Diesel Treat 2000 adds lubricity to ultra low sulfur fuel.
- Lift pump: a FASS adds filtration and steady supply pressure: FASS 100 GPH for 2019 to 2020 or the FASS Drop In Series for 2019 to 2023. Once it is doing the filtering, the FASS filter housing delete for 2019 to 2022 removes the factory housing. See our lift pump guide.
- Pump insurance: the S&S CP3 conversion kit for 2019 to 2020 needs no tune and carries CARB EO D-756-5. For 2022 and newer standard output trucks, Industrial Injection makes a disaster kit.
Crankcase Vent (CCV) Filter
The 6.7 Cummins has a crankcase vent filter that needs replacing on a long interval. Published intervals run from about 67,500 to 75,000 miles depending on year, and the dash will remind you. A plugged CCV filter pushes oil where it does not belong. If you are in there for a turbo job, the Fleece billet CCV tube coupler replaces the plastic piece that cracks.
Cooling System
Ram uses a long life coolant on these trucks. Use the type your manual lists and never mix coolant types. Check the level cold and look over the hoses and pipes on top of the engine at every oil change.
- Pusher coolant reroute kit for 2019 and newer
- Wehrli upper coolant pipe for 2019 to 2024 standard output or 2019 to 2023 high output engines
- Wehrli coolant tank for 2019 to 2023, Fleece heater core replacement hose and the Mishimoto top heater hose upgrade
Air Filter
Inspect the air filter at every oil change and replace it when it is dirty or the dash calls for it. Dusty roads and job sites shorten its life a lot.
Transmission, Transfer Case and Axles
Standard output trucks use the 68RFE and high output 3500s use the Aisin. They have different fluids and different intervals, so check your manual for your transmission. If you have the Aisin, the BD Diesel Aisin filter service kit has what you need for the service. Transfer case and axle intervals get much shorter if you tow.
DEF
Keep the DEF tank topped up with fresh, sealed, API certified fluid. DEF breaks down in heat and age, so do not stockpile it. Never put DEF in the fuel tank. If it happens, do not start the truck.

FAQ
How often should I change the oil on a 2019 and newer 6.7 Cummins?
Follow the oil change indicator. Ram allows up to 15,000 miles, but towing, idling and short trips bring that down, and the indicator will call for it sooner.
How often do the fuel filters get changed on a 2019 and newer 6.7 Cummins?
Ram calls for both the engine mounted filter and the frame mounted fuel water separator every 15,000 miles or 12 months. Drain the water separator whenever the water in fuel light comes on.
When do I replace the CCV filter on a 6.7 Cummins?
When the dash calls for it. Published intervals run from about 67,500 to 75,000 miles depending on year.
Is there a legal way to replace the CP4 pump on a 2019 to 2020 Ram?
Yes. The S&S CP3 conversion kit for 2019 to 2020 Rams needs no tune and carries CARB EO D-756-5.
