VP44 Injection Pump Failure on the 24 Valve Cummins: Signs, Codes and Replacement
The 24 valve Cummins is one of the best diesel engines ever put in a pickup. The Bosch VP44 injection pump bolted to it is the part that gives it a bad name. If you own a 1998.5 to 2002 Ram with the 5.9, you will deal with a VP44 sooner or later.
Here is how to tell if yours is going, what to check first so you do not replace a good pump, and how to pick the right one.
Why VP44 Pumps Fail
The VP44 is an electronic rotary pump that is cooled and lubricated by the diesel running through it. Starve it of fuel and it overheats and wears out fast. The biggest killer is a weak or failing lift pump, followed by heat on the pump's electronics, bad grounds and low voltage.
VP44 Failure Codes
These are the codes that point to a VP44 that needs replacing:
- P0216: injection timing control circuit. The most common VP44 failure code, often called the code of death.
- P1688 and P1689: pump communication and internal faults
- P0215: engine shutoff solenoid
- P0251 through P0260: injection pump fuel metering faults
Symptoms
- Hard starts or long cranking, especially when hot
- Stalling, then restarting after it sits
- Dead pedal or loss of power under load
- Surging or rough idle
- Limp mode with one of the codes above
Check These Before You Buy a Pump
A VP44 is expensive. Rule out the cheap stuff first.
- Lift pump pressure. Put a gauge on it and watch it under load, not just at idle. If supply pressure drops toward zero when you get on it, the lift pump is your first problem, and it will kill a new VP44 too.
- Batteries and grounds. Low voltage causes VP44 codes. Clean and tighten every ground, especially the engine and ECM grounds.
- Wiring and connectors. Look for chafed or corroded wiring at the pump and the ECM.
- Fuel filter. A plugged filter starves the pump the same way a weak lift pump does.
15X or 17X: Which VP44 Do You Need?
| Pump | Fits |
|---|---|
| 15X | 1998.5 to 2002 automatic and 5 speed manual, and 1998.5 to 1999 6 speed non HO |
| 17X | 2000 to 2002 6 speed HO (245 hp) |
1998.5 to 1999 6 speed non HO trucks: call us with your engine serial number before you order so we can verify the right pump.
VP44 Pumps We Carry
- Bosch VP44, 15X and 17X by Thoroughbred Diesel, 12 month unlimited mileage warranty
- VP44 with 24 month warranty, 15X and 17X: rebuilt by certified Bosch techs with all OEM updates, calibrated to current specs and run on a test stand for 4 hours before it ships. Two year unlimited mileage warranty.
- XDP Remanufactured VP44 (XDIPVR15X)
- Industrial Injection Remanufactured VP44, 235 hp and 245 hp
Protect Your Warranty
VP44 warranties are handled by the pump manufacturer, not by us, but we walk you through getting the RMA. Things that void it:
- Cut wires. That includes cutting the harness to install a stealth pump cover.
- Improper install, like a smashed keyway or cracked housing
- Fuel contamination
- An improperly tapped PSG wire
Labor and install costs are not reimbursed under any VP44 warranty. And your core has to be like for like and include the return valve.
Do Not Skip the Lift Pump
Putting a new VP44 on a truck with a weak lift pump is the fastest way to buy two VP44s. These bolt on and bypass the factory block mounted pump:
- AirDog FP 100 4G for 1998.5 to 2004 without an in tank pump: frame mounted, feeds the VP44 directly and returns air and vapor to the tank
- FASS Titanium Signature 165 GPH for 1998.5 to 2004.5: 2 micron filtration, built in water separation and air and vapor removal. If your truck has been retrofitted with an in tank pump, you need the TSD07165G kit instead.
- Bigger builds: FASS 250 GPH and FASS 290 GPH

FAQ
What is the code of death on a 24 valve Cummins?
P0216, the injection timing control circuit code. It is the most common code for a failing VP44 injection pump.
What is the difference between a 15X and 17X VP44?
The 15X fits 1998.5 to 2002 automatic and 5 speed trucks plus 1998.5 to 1999 6 speed non HO trucks. The 17X fits 2000 to 2002 6 speed HO trucks rated at 245 hp.
What kills a VP44 injection pump?
Low fuel supply from a weak lift pump is the biggest cause, since the VP44 is cooled and lubricated by fuel. Low voltage, bad grounds and heat also contribute.
Does a stealth pump cover void the VP44 warranty?
Cutting wires voids the warranty, and that includes cutting the harness to install a stealth cover.
